Location: "Situated midway between Washington and Atlanta (and also midway between Raleigh and Charlotte), Winston-Salem is the heart of the fastest growing area of the country. In fact, half the population of the United States and a host of industrial and consumer markets are within a five-hour drive or a two-hour flight."# Surrounding counties and small towns are within easy driving distance of each other, which include the residentially-friendly areas of Walnut Cove, Lexington, Clemmons, Lewisville, Mocksville, Elkin, King and Kernersville, just to name a few. For example, regarding neighboring Surry County, “We are 15 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 45 minutes from Winston-Salem, 90 minutes from Greensboro and an hour from Charlotte. Sometimes we don’t see our many blessings and our potential until we go somewhere else and then realize the unbelievable treasure we have in this county--David Bradley, president of the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce.” Some of our open positions are closer to the city, while others are in the surrounding small towns. Education: "One of the most important priorities of Winston-Salem’s founders that have stood the test of time was a strong emphasis on education…Today the city is home to a half-dozen colleges and universities, including a pair of University of North Carolina member institutions and one of the nation’s premier private universities. Each year more than 14,000 collegians come to Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, the North Carolina School of the Arts, Salem College, Forsyth Technical Community College and Piedmont Bible College to study everything from anthropology to computer science to medicine to modern dance."#

Medical Care: You care about providing your family with the very best in medical care. This area's medical facilities and research institutions are world renown. "The city’s excellent reputation for medical services is a magnet for some people, says Nancy Dunn, founder of Aladdin Travel & Meeting Planners and past chair of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce. 'Because of our large medical community, people come here, stay and even retire here,' Dunn says."# Speechcenter's medical benefits are accepted statewide, in most cases, and the numerous specialists in this area provide valuable services to those living here.

Culture, the Arts and Recreational Activities: We can not go on without pointing out "the unequalled reputation Winston-Salem enjoys for its arts and cultural opportunities. In the city with the oldest established arts council in the country, residents and visitors can explore Winston-Salem as the Moravians saw it in Old Salem, a recreated living history village downtown. Or take in R.J. Reynolds’ American art collection and the mansion and gardens surrounding it. The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art’s galleries exhibit the best of today’s contemporary art and the Delta Arts Center at Winston-Salem State University showcases the finest African-American culture. Winston-Salem is home to a new Museum of Anthropology, the state’s only museum dedicated to the study of world cultures; and Sci-Works, a hands-on, interactive science museum situated on 15 acres of environmental park land."# Other recreational opportunities lie within close proximity, as well. "Shelton Vineyards [in Surry County] has become a tourist stop as well as a growing industry where eight varieties of wines are produced from 14 different grapes grown on 200 acres. Shelton Vineyards is the largest and best-known winery in the county, but not the only one."3 Asheboro Zoo is another favorite attraction for North Carolina Residents. Young students often take class fieldtrips to the state capitol in Raleigh. Parents and teens enjoy the many shopping districts that are scattered through the area, like Hanes Mall.

Small Town and City Life: What a wonderful combination! There's something for everyone: small, quiet neighborhoods or exciting metropolitan areas, too. These areas are close, but not too close for comfort. Most workers have a short drive from their neighborhoods into the business districts. This area is ideal for those who want to be near a city without being right in one. In fact, Scott Livengood, chairman of Krispy Kreme [based in Winston-Salem], is quoted as calling this area the “greatest place in the world to live and raise a family.”#

Speaking of Davie County, close to Winston-Salem, one article said: “It provides the amenities of a tranquil, rural quality of family life as well as easy accessibility and convenience to metropolitan areas, top-rated public schools, a skilled workforce, a solid industrial base with a strong infrastructure and lower-than-average taxes.”2                                                                                          Photo: Nearby Pilot Mountain

Employment and Business Opportunities: The Triad area is a fast-growing destination for businesses and entrepreneurs. Numerous jobs openings make it easy for loved ones to find suitable employment or start a business of their own.

Weather and Climate Conditions: "Average temperature in the county [of Surry] hovers on 61 degrees, from an average low of 41 in winter to a high of 76 in summer. The elevation of most of the county provides comfortable days and nights and although the cities are located on the edge of the Blue Ridge, snowfall is no higher than in counties at lower levels. The mountains provide moderate climate, but shield the county from heavy snows."3 Weather conditions are warmer further south. All-in-all they make for enjoyable living year-round.
