Education: Charlotte and the
surrounding areas have always looked to the future and realize the
importance education plays in the future of its residents. North Carolina's
16 campus University of North Carolina system is recognized as the best in
the South, and is ranked in the top five nationally. The North Carolina
Community College System was ranked No. 1 in worker training for the second
year in a row, according to October 1999 Expansion Management magazine. The
rankings were decided by the magazine's national panel of site selection
consultants.
“There are at least 16 other two- or four-year institutions of higher learning within a 50-mile radius of Statesville — nine community colleges and seven four-year colleges and universities. The most significant of those is Gardner-Webb University, which had called the Davis School of Nursing its home for more than 20 years."1 This area also has numerous choices for younger students, with exclusive private, public, magnet and charter schools. |

Metropolitan or Small Town Living: Take your pick! A town home in the suburbs, a swanky apartment in South Park, a condo in Downtown Charlotte...there are so many options. Many families enjoy living in the towns around Charlotte for the ease of convenience, but the comfort of small town life. For example, Statesville celebrated its designation as an All America City on Saturday, August 23, 1997 in Historic Downtown Statesville. The Award is given by the National Civic League and sponsored by the Allstate Foundation. "Statesville’s bustling downtown is lined with historic buildings and specialty shops and restaurants. How historic? Forty-seven of the commercial district’s buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Residential neighborhoods, dating to the early 1800s, offer wide, tree-shaded streets and elegant Victorian homes that look as comfortable as an old pair of shoes feels. 'A lot of visitors say it’s one of the most beautiful and unique downtowns that they’ve ever seen,' says Critz of the tourism authority. 'Our residential neighborhoods really are something out of the past.' ”1 The city and nearby areas are always looking for ways to keep the environment welcoming and beautiful. In fact, nearby Gastonia received the 2000 First Place National Award for Litter Prevention in the Nonprofit, Civic and Community Organizations Division. |

Sports and Recreational Activities: Charlotte in particular has sports of every kind ranging from professional sporting teams, NASCAR and even little league. There is shopping galore, fine restaurants, great public and private schools, daycare facilities in key locations and wonderful public libraries. So many great parks and walking trails, outstanding business and entrepreneurial opportunities, a clean and bright uptown perfect for work and after-hour activities. "It only takes a few minutes to drive to Lake Norman, the state’s largest — and considered by many the prettiest — man-made lake. The sailing and windsurfing are good and the fishing’s even better. If you’re looking for more public beaches, camping and picnic areas and nature trails, there’s Duke Power State Park, located on the shores of Lake Norman in Troutman. In all, the Statesville area boasts more than 175 acres of public parks.”1 |

Arts and Culture: Charlotte has a complete array of cultural events including operas, dance, theater, symphony, art museums, galleries, international organizations and festivals. The Mint Museum and Discovery Place draw many visitors. Blockbuster Pavilion hosts numerous musical entertainers each year. Huntersville is home to the exciting and colorful Fall Renessiance Festival. StreetFest and other block festivals take place throughout Charlotte during the year. |
